Lea Fabre is a multi-dimensional artist, with their BFA in Sculpture from RISD. Their work often focuses on the environmental impacts of human behavior, in addition to diverting established waste streams. Ornithology and scientific illustration are of particular interest to them and frequently influence their artistic practice. Their knowledge of natural history and local ecology often brings them into close conversation with Rhode Island’s past and present ecosystems, and its long history of manufacturing (textiles, pottery, jewelry and metal smithing) and agriculture (dairy, food staple crops and flax).

In recent years, Lea has delved deep into the world of soft sculpture, beadwork and fiber arts. It has shaped their current art practice into one which includes teaching others to sew, crochet, knit, weave and spin. Their passion for fiber arts stems from their own familial history with craft, and their zeal for craft as a form of resistance (against patriarchy, oppression, restriction of knowledge, fast-fashion waste, and blind consumerism). On an ever-developing path of learning, Lea is often found researching craft and fiber art methods and associated cultural traditions.

As a current Staff member at the Edna Lawrence Nature Lab, Lea is dedicated to the care of live animals, plants and the extensive collection of natural specimens. This is reflected in their work, as the Nature Lab is both a muse and a “second home” to Lea.

Their work often features the individual live animals, and specimens, which serve as learning resources for RISD students and the larger Providence community. With a personal investment in community engagement with art, Lea has also had work experience at Roger Williams Park Zoo and Waterfire.
